This momentous occasion calls for a post on the long-forgotten blog, does it not? WE’RE HAVING A BABY! It feels surreal to type that out. Come January 2020, Tim and I will be parents to a sweet little babe! I’m continually overwhelmed by what a massive gift and honor it is to be carrying our very own son or daughter to welcome into the world in a few short months.
Thankful to our friend Tessa French for these announcement photos!
I guess that motherly must-document-everything instinct is kicking in, so I’m aiming to blog regularly throughout this pregnancy! I found a list of pregnancy-related questions that I’ll be going through and answering with each new pregnancy update. So, without further ado, let’s hop into the first trimester update! Can’t believe I’ve already made it this far! Time has absolutely flown by.
How far along? I am currently 13 weeks, 3 days! Again, how? It still feels like we just got the positive test result!
Baby is the size of: According to The Bump app, Baby B is currently the size of a lemon! A lemon is not small sounding at all to me, compared to what feels like two seconds ago, when we first found out, and the app said that baby could fit on the tip of a bobby pin!
Wearing maternity clothes? Here and there! I have one pair of maternity jeans and two maternity dresses that I bought early and have been wearing all along. It was pretty early on that I started to not like the feeling of anything tight on my belly (like my non-maternity high waisted jeans!). Maternity clothes are just so much comfier! I may never go back. Haha!
Stretch marks? Not yet, but it’s still so early. I use Bio-Oil whenever I can, but I’ve also heard that stretch marks are genetic and that you’ll either get them or you won’t. Oh well! If I do get stretch marks, I’ll wear them with pride, knowing they’re proof of the life that grew inside of me!
Sleep? My quality of sleep definitely went down starting super early in pregnancy. I’ve just found it harder to get comfortable, and I wake up more easily, whether it’s to make a bathroom run, or just from rolling over in bed. Although, I’m still able to get enough sleep to feel well-rested most mornings! I’m thankful for that. I think my body is demanding more sleep to help make up for the lower quality! I’ve gone from my usual 7-8 hours a night to 8-10 hours a night! ( I know, I know…enjoy it while I can!)
Best moment this week? I got to hear the baby’s heartbeat for the first time this week! So in love. Also, started feeling well enough to work out again, which I’m thrilled about.
Miss anything? Hot tubs are number one. I’m a bit hot tub obsessed… despite the fact that pre-pregnancy, I would get in a hot tub not even once a month! Now, of course, it feels like I see them everywhere, and I want nothing more than to hop in and soak in that glorious 104 degree water. But, I’ll survive. Worth it to keep this little one safe!
Movement? Not yet. Can’t wait!
Cravings/ Aversions? Most of my first trimester symptoms are gone, but the aversions have stuck around. Unfortunately, I’ve been pretty repulsed by almost all vegetables, grilled chicken, most fruits, and peanut butter for the past three months! All things that were staples for pre-pregnancy Caylie. Ready for those food aversions to disappear so I can get back into a healthy groove! I’ve had a couple of one-time cravings- sour candy and chicken tikka masala being the main ones (and, after I ate those things, I wanted nothing more to do with them!).
Feeling Sick? I did feel nauseous throughout most of the first trimester, which wasn’t fun, especially considering I was traveling a lot. In the first trimester, I traveled to Florida, Vegas, Ireland, and Scotland! Haha- all preplanned trips that just happened to fall when they did. They were all a blast despite feeling pretty off. I did take Bonjesta (B6 + Unisom) throughout, which definitely helped!
Symptoms? Fatigue has been very real, and continues to be! Shortness of breath. Higher heart rate. Increased hunger, but smaller appetite. Hot flashes (very bizarre feeling for this always-cold girl). Headaches. Occasional round ligament pain. All in all, I’ve felt better than I always imagined, though! I guess that’s one of the only plus-sides of my tendency to prepare for the worst.
Labor Signs? No, no, no!
Belly button in or out? Totally in. But, my belly itself is starting to pop! I don’t think others can really see it at this point, but I can definitely tell a difference!
Wedding rings fitting? Yes!
Happy or moody? I’m feeling really happy! Just super thankful and trying my best stay grounded and to soak it all in, especially since I wasn’t able to do the best job of that during the first trimester. I honestly think the combination of feeling constantly ill and very anxious about the possibility of something going wrong- not to mention intense hormone shifts- had me feeling pretty all over the place for the last couple of months.
Looking forward to? This Friday, we are finding out the gender! I’m SO excited to find out if little babe is a boy or girl. As of right now, I’m feeling like it’s a boy. Tim’s thinking girl. We shall see!
Books/ podcasts I’m currently loving? Together, Tim and I are reading Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom, and absolutely loving it. I’m also reading Ina May Gaskin’s Guide To Childbirth, after hearing it recommended by lots and lots of women! Podcasts I’m loving: The Birth Hour, Invisibilia, Hidden Brain, Crime Junkie, and The Meeting House.
That’s all, folks! Here are some photos from the first trimester! We were SO surprised and thrilled when we found out that I was pregnant on the morning of May 6th, 2019!
I may or may not have continued to take daily tests for a while after that. I loved to see that line progression, knowing that it meant my HCG levels were rising every single day! Excitement? Anxiety? You tell me. Ha!
This was when I got my first maternity clothing item in the mail- the comfiest pair of jeans I’d ever put on my body!
Hello, little bitty baby bump!
So long for now!
-A very excited Caylie
